pleasantly surprised!

Depart from: KUL   To: LAX - On date: 05/Jan/2012 - Flight Type: Economy

Like most, I read all the reviews available online and was prepared for the worst. To my surprise, It wasn't bad at all! KUL-PVG - food: 2 choices were offered for breakfast - chinese was porridge, western was omelette. the side dish for the porridge was some kind of veges that wasn't palatable. omelette looked like soggy roti canai. other than that, it was pleasant. on the way back from PVG to KUL, food was better but the fish had bones in it. not suitable for young children. PVG-LAX - food: much much better. tasty even! flight attendants would come round offering water thru out the flight. on the way back, less of the water serving. one male flight attendant was particularly inexperienced, serving one passenger's used cup to other passenger without even realizing it, much to the 2nd passenger's horror, but he still drank it anyway. -Toilets were clean on all 4 flights. -Flight attendants would only speak mandarin to you, as long as you look asian and will ONLY speak english when it's necessary - ie. when you are clearly not asian.. their attitude is curt but i don't think they mean to be rude. it's probably just their culture. At least there is no double standard like some other airlines, that treat caucasian passengers nicer than asian passengers.. no exaggeration. I've been on those flights numerous times. -Seats on flight - a little hard on the backside considering it's 12-14h flights to LAX. -No personal screen, only one in the middle, shared by about 4 rows of passengers. It wasn't a big deal for me. If you want a clearer view, make sure you're seated in the middle. -No idea if it's the airport's fault that seat pick was not allowed.. we, a party of 3, including a toddler weren't seated together in a row. it was either 2 in front, and 1 behind or one being in a different row, but still close by. -Flights were generally on time, at least for one from LAX-PVG. Arrived about 1/2 hr later than expected, so instead of a 2 hr transit, we had limited time to get thru the immigration, and go back into the departure lounge. Staff at transfer desk didn't know what she was doing. For the price we paid, it was definitely worth it. I'd no doubt go on their flights again, but will ask for more pillows to sit on next time round.

China Eastern Airlines Business Class Crap

Depart from: Shanghai   To: Singapore - On date: 02/Oct/2011 - Flight Type: Business Class

Business class on China Eastern Airlines is crap. The food is about the same quantity as Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific economy class, but the quality is worse. Only one drink was offered at the start of the flight, but nothing was offered during the meal. The cabin crew slept in their seats, or spent their time talking amongst themselves, ignoring passengers. There were no snacks available after the meal, like there are on BA, Singapore Airlines or Cathay Pacific. I spoke to the cabin crew and asked them if they had ever flown on other airlines, to experience the difference. Some had, but they did not realise their service was any worse. The in-flight entertainment did not include any recent-release movies. There was nothing worth watching, except the route map, giving some idea of when the flight might end. China Eastern is a crappy airline, and should be avoided if at all possible.

Adequate service but very little leg room and no personal TV screen

Depart from: Frankfurt   To: Sydney - On date: 16/Jan/2011 - Flight Type: Economy

Positives: Both legs of the the flight (Frankfurt -> Shanghai and Shanghai -> Sydney) were punctual in both directions, the service was consistently adequate, the food was tasty for airline fare. The staff were diligent and spoke functional but basic English. The ticket was comparatively cheap, given that I bought it only three months before departure and flew to Australia in the peak summer period. Negatives: Very little leg room, particularly for taller people, a problem compounded when the person in front of you leans their seat back to sleep. No personal video screens means I was reliant on the airline to choose good films for general public screening, which didn't happen. Altogether, despite adequate customer service and respectable food, the utter lack of leg room and absence of a personal TV screen made my in total 24 hour flight from Frankfurt to Sydney quite unpleasant. I was stiff, sore and very poorly rested by the time I arrived, and had no means to zone my brain out with continuous films after it became too tired and distracted to read. I would not fly with CE again, and would not recommend them to anyone else, particularly not to taller people.
